Dr. Martin “Marty†L. Curtis (October 22, 1939 – February 23, 2015)

Dr. Martin “Marty†L. Curtis, 75, of Zanesville passed away at his home on February 23, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Dr. Curtis was born in New Concord, Ohio on October 22, 1939 to the late Dr. Isaac Curtis and Kay Curtis Ambrose. A 1957 graduate of New Concord High School, Martin played both basketball and football for the Little Muskies. Notably, he was a part of the famed 1956 MVL championship undefeated and unscored upon football team. A proud 1961 alumnus of Ohio Wesleyan University, and a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Dr. Curtis went on to earn his D.D.S. in 1967 at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
Upon graduation from dental school, Martin served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force until he was honorably discharged in 1969. He then went on to complete a one-year residency in anesthesiology at University Hospital at The Ohio State University and followed with a second residency, in oral surgery, in Pittsburgh. Dr. Curtis returned to Zanesville in 1973 to start his own successful oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. In 1995, Dr. Curtis and Dr. Larry Towning combined their practices and formed East Ohio Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Martin retired from the practice in 2004.
Martin excelled in his personal life as he did in his profession, and pursued his many hobbies with gusto. From the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s, you could often find Dr. Curtis on the field or court at local high school athletics with his camera, documenting every moment (and every athlete). As a duplicate bridge player, he played in international and national tournaments partnering with friends and strangers alike. After only two years, he achieved the status of Life Master. An enthusiastic (and sometimes aggressive) golfer, Dr. Curtis was the founding and sole member of the Bedlam Golf Club.
Those familiar with Martin knew of his dedication: to his family, especially his three grandchildren who he completely adored, his friends, and, of course, his favorite beverage. Never without a Coke and a smile, he was always ready to share both.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Beth Curtis; sons, Benji (Michelle), Brad (Miwako), and Tim (Niki) Curtis; grandchildren, Alex, Anna, and Austin Curtis; brothers, Alan (Karen), Charlie (Susan), and Clay (Mary) Curtis; nieces and nephews, Trisha, Tom, and Debbie, Mona and Ben, Aaron, Shannon and Adam, and Jimmy.
Dr. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Joe Ambrose.
The family will have a “Celebration of Life†gathering from 3 to 6pm, Saturday March 7th at Bryan Place, 49 North Sixth Street in Zanesville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice and Palliative Medicine, 713 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, OH 43701.
The Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave., Zanesville is in charge of the arrangements. To share memories and condolences with Marty’s family, please visit www.BryanHardwickFuneralHome.com.
