EAST GUERNSEY, Ohio- East Guernsey school board officials voted to allow certain staff members to be armed.

According to school board member Kyle Cochran the East Guernsey Local School Board of Education unanimously voted to authorize the arming of some staff members. Cochran said the board will now move forward with working out the fine details and implementing the plan. Some Americans have been calling for schools to arm teachers in light of the recent school shootings.

“I think it’s a good decision. It can happen at anywhere, at anytime, at anyplace And we have a good school here that’s pretty safe but I’m glad to see it happen,” said John Kaplet a local resident.

A press release from the district superintendent says staff members who volunteer to be armed will be required to attend training through the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office and annually renew their training. The weapons will be concealed at all times and only used in an emergency Officials say the plan will take affect during the 2018-2019 school year.
