Essential Tips for Lightning Safety Awareness Week

ZANESVILLE, OH – Spring and summer bring warmer weather and blooming flowers, but they also bring thunder and lightning storms.

This week is Lightning Safety Awareness Week, a perfect time to brush up on how to stay safe when storms roll in. It’s important to be weather aware. If you hear thunder, it’s time to go indoors immediately. Remember, “When thunder roars, go indoors!” Avoid standing under trees, as they can attract lighting, Instead, seek shelter in a grounded building.

“An example of how lightning affects when it hits the ground, is to go to a pond and drop a stone into the water. When you do, you’ll see the ripple effect. That ripple effect is exactly what the electricity does when it hits a tree or the ground. It doesn’t just stay right where it hits, it goes out. That’s why people get electrocuted when it hits a tree that they’re under. If you can, get indoors where you’re in a grounded building or at least get in a vehicle. The rubber tires will offer some protection, but not complete protection from the lightning,” EMA Director Jeff Jadwin said.

If you witness someone get struck by lightning, call 911 right away. Quick action can make a difference and save lives.

“If you see someone get struck by lightning, you need to call 911. Then, you need to check to see if they got a pulse. If they don’t have a pulse, start CPR to try to revive them,” Jadwin said.

Let’s enjoy the beauty of summer while staying safe. Keep an eye on the weather and remember these simple safety tips to protect yourself and your loved ones.
