Ex-Muskie Star Weir Inspires Tomorrow’s Stars With Basketball Camp
BYESVILLE, OH – Matt Weir was once lighting up the court at John Glenn High School, even helping lead the Muskies to a state title run back in 2016.
Now, he is returning home to give back to young local athletes who stand in his old shoes with his very own camp.
“I started ‘M-W-B’ (Matt Weir Basketball) probably about three years ago” says Weir. “To be honest, it was more to keep me in shape because I was playing professionally overseas. I just wanted to get in and work out with kids and try to teach them the right way to play, that I knew how to.”
Since then, it has just become something so much bigger, as he has grown the “Matt Weir Basketball” brand.
Weir adds that it started with one kid before growing exponentially over time.
“After my senior year, coming back before playing professionally, it grew to around fifty, and after my professional career, it’s been growing every year since then.”
Weir’s four day camp this week in Byesville sees kids from sixth grade upwards of college age in attendance, in hopes to hone their skills. As much as he continues to enjoy the game, what Weir gets out of this is what he hopes his campers do as well through the game of basketball.
He continues, “I tell everybody this. It is so much more fulfilling for myself than when I even played, to see these guys live up to their dreams and their expectations.”
The former high school star always wanted to come home and reestablish success, growth, and excitement that he experienced during his playing days with the Muskies, adding that it was the best time in his career to help shape him as both a player and a person.
“I knew if I could come back and make an impact on that age group and around this area, it will eventually turn into fruition of having success around the area.”
From a player to now a teacher of the game he loves, Weir hopes to inspire others to grow in the game that he has always known.
