February is National Heart Awareness Month

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Many are familiar with February 14th being Valentine’s Day. But that’s not the only day you should be thinking about hearts.

February is national heart awareness month. And with Monday being February 1st, we went to the Muskingum Recreation Center to learn about heart healthy exercises.

“There’s a lot of benefits for the heart when it comes to exercise. So what we recommend is coming to the gym about 3-5 days a week. With in that you try to aim to complete 150 minutes of aerobic activity. That can be anything on the cardiovascular machines” said Exercise Specialist Lauren Parker.

Parker said aerobic exercises can help decrease blood pressure and heart rate. Parker also says you can make exercise fun by mix and matching the exercises you do.

“We have a lot of alternates here at the MRC. We have a lot of classes people take advantage of both on land and water. A lot of people take advantage of having a buddy system. So if they don’t like doing exercise. Sometimes they take a friend. They take to the walking track,” said Parker.

The Muskingum Recreation Center is open seven days a week and offers multiple membership options.
