Flags of Freedom Back in Town

Flags Of Freedom Back In Town

More than 500 flags will wave proudly as part of the Flags of Freedom event next week.

Coordinator Bud Johnson says the program was started by a couple in Columbus who’s only son died while serving our country.

"They decided to do something about it," he said. "They put together a traveling flag display. It has grown to where it has over 500 flags on display. 209 will go in the honor section. Ohio has lost 209 young heroes over there."

Johnson says Muskingum County has lost five soldiers since the program started in 2002. He says Perry County has lost three and Morgan County, one.

"Every time I go, still, when I walk up in the honor section, one of those kids gets me every time," said Johnson.

Johnson says between 3,000 – 4,000 people walk through during the 36-hour show.

The event kicks off at Zane Landing Park with the opening ceremony next Friday, May 14 at 5 pm. It will be open 24 hours until mid-day Sunday.

The event is free.
