Focus on Safety Belt Enforcement

The Ohio State Highway Patrol joins forces Monday with other members of the 6-State Trooper Project to focus on safety belt enforcement.

The high-visibility enforcement effort will include Indiana State Police, Kentucky State Police, Michigan State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, West Virginia State Police along with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

In 2014, 450 people died in traffic crashes on Ohio’s roadways while not wearing a seatbelt, out of 745 total deaths. In the last five years, 61 percent of traffic fatalities in Ohio were unbelted.

“Wearing a safety belt is a nearly effortless way to stay safer while on the roadways,” said Colonel Paul Pride, Patrol superintendent. “All motorists should buckle up every trip, every time.”

The 6-State Trooper Project is a multi-state law enforcement partnership aimed at providing combined and coordinated law enforcement and security services in the areas of highway safety, criminal patrol and intelligence sharing.

The week long initiative ends on Memorial Day.
