Dresden, Ohio-It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Francis Walter Holzschuher, 86, of Dresden, who passed away at his home on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 10:42pm after a lengthy illness.

Born November 19, 1938, in Zanesville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mary (Beckert) Holzschuher. After graduating from Zanesville High School in 1957, Francis served honorably in the U.S. Navy until 1961. He then returned home and married Shirley Prouty, his lifelong sweetheart, on September 30, 1961. They settled in Dresden, where they raised their children, Brenda and Brian. Francis was a pillar of the Dresden community. He devoted 25 years to the Dresden Village Council, including service as Council president, BPA member, and played a pivotal role in securing the Swim Center and Senior Center for the community. His dedication extended to American Legion Post #399 where he served as finance officer, among other roles, for 25 years.

Following a 35-year career with General Electric in Coshocton, Francis established Holzschuher Home Repairs, contributing to numerous residences throughout Dresden. He was also instrumental in organizing the Dresden homecoming for more than three decades. Alongside his wife, Francis traveled extensively across the United States in their motorhome. More than anything else, Francis was a devoted family member. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, from quaint evenings at homes to large family gatherings. His unwavering support was the cornerstone of the family, and he instilled values of kindness and integrity that will be continued for generations.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Shirley (Prouty) Holzschuher; daughter, Brenda (Chuck) Ford; granddaughters, Katie (Scott) Schlegel, Leighanne Ford (Greg) Eppley, and Scarlett Ford (Michael) Fink; great-granddaughter, Grace Schlegel; great-grandson, Lucian Eppley; sister, Becky Hayes; and many friends and family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Phillip, Raymond “Butch,” John, and Billy, as well as his beloved son Brian Francis Holzschuher in 2021.

Family and friends may visit 1:00pm-4:00pm, Sunday, September 7, 2025, at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Monday, September 8, 2025, at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Robinson officiating. Francis will be laid to rest at Dresden Cemetery, with full military honors. There will be a meal and fellowship following the service at First Baptist Church in Dresden.
