Free Lunches This Summer
Zanesville kids ages 1 to 18 are eligible to receive free lunches this summer at the city parks and other locations. The summer lunch program begins next Monday, June 10 and will go through August 9.
"We have 19 different sites that we deliver food for the kids. We start at about 11:00-11:15 a.m. and we deliver clear up to 12:30 p.m," said Vicki Wheeler, Food Service Director for the Zanesville City School District.
Adams Circle, Calvert Park, Zanesville Middle School, Putnam Hill Park and Fair Oaks Park are just a few of the places where your kids can get a free lunch this summer. Wheeler says the program is essential because a lot of kids don’t eat as much over the summer because parents aren’t around as often, so the parks are a perfect place to serve lunch.
"I work in conjunction with Zane State College, they have grants that they put two or three of their kids in our parks and they make sure the kids eat at the park and they do activities prior to and after for about an hour before and after and they clean up the area and pick up the trash so that the city doesn’t have to go back and do that."
Wheeler says the program usually serves around 28,000 lunches every summer.
