Funeral services are set for a police officer who authorities said was killed by a man who set out to find a cop and kill him.

The Brucker and Kishler Funeral home website said the family and friends, of 34-year-old Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell Jr., will receive friends and acquaintances from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Friday at the funeral home.

The funeral service will take place Saturday at 11am on the Newark Campus of Ohio State University and Central Ohio Technical College-Adena Hall.  Interment will follow at Wilson Cemetery.

Officer Cottrell was a 2000 graduate of Newark High School and received his degree in Criminal Justice from COTC in 2002.

He was killed late Sunday in the line of duty. Officer Cottrell’s body was found behind the Village Municipal Building in Danville. Police said he was alleged to have been killed by Herschel Jones III.

Jones girlfriend had called 911 to say Jones had weapons and was looking to kill an officer. Authorities said Jones is in custody and expected to be charged with murder. Cottrell previously worked at police departments in Frazeysburg, Thornville and Utica.
