Gant Foundation Strawberry Festival
Of all the summer treats to share with friends, the Nelson T. Gant Foundation is sharing strawberries at the Strawberry Festival.
Anita Jackson of the foundation says Nelson T. Gant was famous in his own right, just for the food.
“Nelson Gant was famous for providing strawberries and cream for people traveling along Route 40,” said Jackson. “We had talked for a while about having something that recognizes that and having the strawberry festival.”
Jackson says this is the first year for the festival, which they hope to make an annual event.
“We decided this year, since our educational center is open, to have the festival,” she said. “People have donated items that are made out of strawberries, strawberry desserts, salad, and we’re serving those to people who drop in today.”
Jackson says the festival serves as a fundraiser, but also to show off the new educational center.
The center’s hours are Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon.
