Healthier School Lunches are in the Bag

School lunches have become a federal state and local issue. Statistics and the Foundation for a Healthier Generation observe kids eat half of their calories a day while at school.

Schools in Muskingum County are being assessed to see what option they have. The health department speaks to principals, teachers and food service people to find out what is being served.

"We are helping them throughout their life and through out their childhood to eat a little healthier and when they see those options available at school and know what they are and know what they taste like they are more likely to at them out of school too"  Bonnie Kirsch, Director of Community Health Promotion.

One way to help the problem is for schools to look at the federal plan. Kirsch suggests forming a wellness plan.

"Start to build some kind of a plan that begins to look 2, 3, 5 years into the future to determine if parents and the school can support better healthier choices" said Kirsch.

The hope is this generation will have less heart disease, diabetes, and obesity issues.
