High school basketball player of the week – Ethan Heller

THORNVILLE, Ohio — Sheridan’s Ethan Heller has been voted the WHIZ-TV high school basketball player of the week.
Heller scored 31 points, and made a school-record 17 free throws, in Sheridan’s 76-66 overtime win against Tri-Valley on January 23rd. The win handed the Scotties their first league-loss of the season, and put the Generals just one loss behind Tri-Valley and John Glenn for first-place in the MVL.
“It was a great win, a much needed win. A big win for the conference, and a big momentum boost. We rebounded the ball well, I thought we played great defense and got the job done and that’s what we needed to do,” said Heller.
Surging Sheridan hasn’t let down since the victory either. The Generals recorded wins against Philo and Rosecrans last week to run their winning streak to eight straight games, and improve to 12-2 overall on the season, and 8-2 in MVL play. Heller’s hot-hand continued in both wins, scoring 25 and 20 points respectively in the two games, but Heller attributed his success to the help of his teammates and coaches.
“Just teammates setting me up to get open looks, the coaches running great plays for me to get open looks too, and everything’s just been falling so far which is good,” Heller explained.
And while the current winning streak is nice, Heller says his team’s goal is still to win their remaining games and hopefully claim the MVL Title.
“The ultimate goal no matter what is to win out. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing and keep working hard to get better.”
Sheridan is back on the floor Tuesday night when they travel to McConnelsville to take on Morgan, before hosting New Lexington at Glen Hursey gym on Friday night.
Final Voting Results:
Ethan Heller (Sheridan) 33%
Alex Valentine (Cambridge) 28%
Cameron Brooks-Harris (Zanesville) 32%
Matt Applegate (Rosecrans) 7%
