ZANESVILLE, OH – The Zanesville Fire Department shed some light on the importance of road safety, especially in the context of yielding for emergency vehicles.

The sudden blare of sirens and the flashing lights are indicators that an emergency vehicle is approaching. In these moments, the primary rule is to safely pull over on the right side of the road and stop.

“Don’t panic. Remain calm. If you can safely move to the right, move to the right and come to a complete stop. If you can’t move to the right due to an obstacle, just stop where you are. Never move to the left,” Zanesville Firefighter Paramedic, Billy Mitchell said.

It’s extremely important to follow this fundamental rule of the road. The failure to comply with this rule can cause dangerous situations, putting both responders and civilians at risk of injury.

“If somebody doesn’t move over for the emergency lights, or if they move to the left, it can cause an accident. It can cause us to use our fire trucks and push a car on accident and hurting a civilian,” Mitchell said.

When you hear a siren or see flashing lights, act promptly and safely. Your cooperation could save a life.
