James “Jim” Burkhart

James P. Burkhart, 89 of Zanesville, died 11:05 PM, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at his home. He was born Monday, August 19, 1935, in Lewisville, Ohio, the son of Elmer Burkhart and Veronica (Noll) Burkhart. He married Rita (Paul) Burkhart on Saturday, August 11, 1956, and was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
Jim worked with Monsanto for many years, and retired following many years of dairy farming. Jim was a builder and assisted all his children in building their homes. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a former 4-H Advisor, and enjoyed bowling. Many will remember Jim for his many years working in greenhouses in New Lexington, and teaching his green ways. He always enjoyed a friendly game of cards and going to the casino.
Jim is survived by his wife of the home. Rita (Paul) Burkhart; four sons, Phil (Karen) Burkhart, Steve (Cindy) Burkhart, Pat (Karen) Burkhart and Joe (Peach) Burkhart; one daughter, Jean (Roger) Goodin; several grandchildren, Alex (Victoria Sellers) Burkhart, Andrew (Courtney) Burkhart, Alyssa (Darian Anderson) Burkhart, Austin ( fiancée’ Emma Pruzan), Shelly (Mike) Sowers, Stacy Sczesny, Stephanie Bever, Brittany (Tom) Ross, Kristopher (Stephanie) Burkhart, Dash (Ashlee) McNeal, Tiffany Savage, Jessica (Tyler) Davisson, Rachel (fiancée’ Zach Russell) Goodin, and Shannon (Greg) Mentzer; 28 great grandchildren; siblings, Ellis (Marg Southern) Burkhart, Judy (Larry) Gallagher and Mark (Mary) Burkhart and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen, Dale and Francis Burkhart and one great grandson, Bradyn Bever.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Lynn Wordon, Tammy Gossett, Linda Robison and Jane Sabbe for all the care and attention given to Jim during his illness
Friends may call 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, May 12, 2025, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Beal as celebrant. Jim will be laid to rest in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
