John and Annie Glenn Museum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Ohio Historic Site Prevention Advisory Board voted to nominate the John and Annie Glenn Museum for the National Register of Historic Places.
The process has been and will continue to be a long one. Betsy Taylor, Director of Education for the East Muskingum Museum Foundation, says it has always been a historic place and they will not hear anything until next year but they feel confident.
“Well John Glenn is a favorite son. There are still a lot of people around here who remember him from his boyhood, his teenage years and even beyond because he did make this his home base. He came back often and he interacted with his friends and relatives who were still here,” Taylor said.
They have had to jump through hoops and take the time getting information perfect. The State approved the grant application and now it is on to the next committee.
“He was a fighter pilot during World War II and then later in Korea he was military test pilot breaking records. He answered the first astronaut call,” Taylor said. “He was 3rd on the roster of the Mercury project and he was the first American, not the first human, but the first American to orbit the Earth.”
He went on to become a U.S. Senator and then went to space again for a science project. Taylor said this will mean a great deal to the community.
