ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The students at John Glenn High School will be presenting “Guys and Dolls” this weekend at Pritchard Laughlin Auditorium.

Guys and Dolls is a musical comedy that combines elements of short stories written by Damon Runyon in the 1920’s and 1930’s about gangsters, gamblers, and other characters of the New York underworld.

“‘Guys and Dolls’ takes place in the 1940s, 1950s, and it’s about two separate stories. One of them is Nathan Detroit and his girlfriend Adelaide who works at the Hot Box. So he makes a bet that he can’t take this certain ‘doll’, or Sarah Brown, to Havana because she’s very strict and high strung. And he ends up taking her to Havana, but I don’t want to spoil the rest of the show,” explained student Pamela Losego, who plays the role of “Sarah Brown.”

Losego says her character, Sarah Brown, devotes her life, unsuccessfully, to trying to save all of New York and is on a quest to find the right guy. When she finds a man that is the opposite of what she is really looking for, she takes it upon herself to try and change him.

A cast that includes students from grades 8-12, most have been working since January. However, one student says he got put into this role later in the process.

“I was put into the role a bit late, around February. This character has been a little bit different than most of my characters. I usually play calmer, more collected. But Nathan’s just all over the place trying to get everything prepared for what he’s trying to do. So it’s been interesting trying to adjust to that, said Jacob Barnhouse, who plays “Nathan Detroit.”

Barnhouse says that Nathan Detroit has been running a craps game since he was 18. When he finds out he needs $1,000 to run his game, he makes a wager with Sky Masterson that sets up the story of his challenge to get Sarah Brown to Havana.

Guys and Dolls will be shown on Friday and Saturday night at 7PM and Sunday afternoon at 3PM. For tickets and show information, call (740)439-7009.
