John L. Lewis, 77, of New Lexington, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 13, 1947 in Zanesville, Ohio to the late Linton D. Lewis Sr. and Margaret Hillis Lewis.

John graduated from New Lexington High School Class of 1965. He played football, basketball and ran track. He was a member of the 1964 undefeated MVL championship football team. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky University and taught and coached at Crooksville Village School District and Southern Local School District. He also worked in the oil and gas industry. John was a Christian and loved Psalm 23:4 “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.” John was a gifted musician and song writer. In 1984 country music artist Del Reeves performed one of John’s songs at the Grand Ole Opry. John had good friends who cared deeply for him and always lifted his spirit. John enjoyed nightly movies with his wife and pets by his side. He cherished his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed chatting and texting with his brother and sisters.

John is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jennifer; his three daughters, Jodi (Ian) McCoy, Jamie Mollohan and Jessi Lewis; son, Jason (Mindy) Lewis. Additional survivors include grandchildren, Peyton, Ashlyn Grace and Jackson McCoy. Izabelle and Charlotte Mollohan, Evelynn Lasker and Dylan, Jake and Cooper Lewis. He also survived by his brother, Judge Linton D. (Anne) Lewis Jr.; sister, Linda Williams and brother – in – law, Joe Davis; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved pets, including his dog Willy.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Ann Lewis Davis; brother – in – law, Ed Williams; grandparents, David J. Lewis, Grace Lewis, Bessie Lewis and Frank and Laura Hillis and son – in – law, Michael Mollohan.

Calling Hours will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025 at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill street, New Lexington, Ohio.

Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at the funeral home with Reverend Richard Newlon officiating.

Burial will follow in New Lexington Cemetery
