Kenneth “Wayne” Kirby

Kenneth Wayne “Wayne” Kirby, 86, of Zanesville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026. He was born on February 5, 1940, in Glouster, Ohio, to the late James H. and Mary E. (Viney) Kirby.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of many years, Carolyn (Norris) Kirby; and his siblings, Dwight Viney, Mary Bernadine Keels, James Kirby, Shirley Wilson, and Gertrude Morgan.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Franklin of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other loved ones and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Wayne was born and raised in Glouster, Ohio, where he developed a love of sports at a young age. A gifted athlete, he proudly played both football and basketball throughout his high school years. His talent, dedication, and accomplishments on the court and field earned him a well-deserved place in the Trimble Tomcat Athletic Hall of Fame, an honor that reflected his lasting impact as an athlete.

Wayne proudly served in the United States Army, where he worked as a diesel mechanic and attained the rank of Sergeant. Wayne took great pride in his military service and in the responsibility of serving and protecting his country. The discipline, dedication, and work ethic he developed during his years in the Army remained qualities that he carried with him throughout the rest of his life.

Following his military service, Wayne began a long and successful career with Burnham Boiler, where he worked his way into a supervisory position and served for many years before his retirement. He was respected for his strong work ethic, knowledge, and dedication to his career.

Wayne was also a true car enthusiast. He loved attending car races and car shows and took great pride in working on, rebuilding, and restoring classic cars. There was a special joy in bringing an old car back to life, and Wayne enjoyed every part of the process.

When he wasn’t working on one of his cars, Wayne could often be found with Carolyn at their trailer along the Ohio River. He loved spending weekends there, relaxing, enjoying the outdoors, and, most importantly, entertaining family and friends. Those weekends created many cherished memories that will remain with those who knew and loved him.

Wayne lived a life marked by hard work, service, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the people and passions that mattered most to him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Burrell Funeral Services, with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Glouster Cemetery.
