Laura (Becky) Hoops Sorrell went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, April 3, 2025.

She was born November 8, 1938, to Fred and Rema Hoops in New Lexington, Ohio.

Becky was a 1956 graduate of Moxahala High School and was valedictorian of her class.

Becky was a long-time member of the New Lexington Church of the Nazarene until she moved to Belpre, Ohio. While in Belpre, she attended the Belpre Church of the Nazarene and then later, Parkersburg First Church of the Nazarene.

Becky was an avid reader and loved to do the daily crossword puzzle in the daily newspaper. She also loved to play card games.

She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them and watching them grow up. She will always be remembered for her infectious laugh, her positive outlook on life, and being an encouragement to those she met. Recently, a friend wrote this about Becky: “When I think of Becky, I think of the word “sweetness”-and that she was! Sweet in serving the Lord, sweet in being with her family, and sweet to her friends and those who knew her. She also had a unique laugh that added to that sweetness.”

Becky is survived by her son, Gary (Penny) Sorrell of New Lexington, her daughter Karen (Scott) Huddle of Dayton, her brother Jim (Melody) Hoops, her sister-in-law Janet Sorrell, her uncle Jim Conrad, her grandchildren Kelly (Nick) Polk, Tyler (Shelby) Huddle, and Alison (Michael) Brown, her great-grandsons Everett and Hudson Brown, and by several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years Neil Sorrell, her son Kevin Sorrell, her mother Rema McCune, her father Fred Hoops, her stepfather George McCune, and her brother Charles Bankes.

Calling hours will be held from 6pm-8pm on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio.

Her service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 11, 2025 at the funeral home with Reverend Jeff Taylor officiating.

Burial will follow in New Lexington Cemetery, New Lexington, Ohio.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bickford of Lancaster and FairHoPe for their professionalism and excellent care given to Becky.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to FairHoPe Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 282 Sells Rd., Lancaster, Ohio 43130.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8. (NIV)
