Law Day Essay Contest Recipients Recognized

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Muskingum County Bar Association is recognizing an annual event to mark commitment to the rule of law.
Law Day has been celebrated for 62 years providing an opportunity to
understand the laws and legal process all Americans share to protect our
liberties, justice, and freedoms. The Muskingum County Bar Association
sponsored an essay contest through Scholarship Central for 2019
graduates of Muskingum County high schools to recognize Law Day. The
theme of the essay was “Free Speech, Free Press, and Free Society.”
“We want to mark our commitment to law and let the young people
understand it. So this year we’re talking about free speech, free press,
and why it’s important for our society to have,” said Committee
Chairman, Susan McDonald.
There were 15 applicants for the contest, and three winners were
chosen. Chad Bell, a senior of Tri-Valley High School, received a $1500
scholarship for his written essay. Other recipients were Maddie
Phillips, Philo High School senior, who received a $1000 scholarship;
and Austin McCleary, a West Muskingum High School senior, received a
$500 scholarship.
“Seniors are busy. It’s the last year of high school, and for them to
take time and pause and think about a pretty serious, dry subject is
good and nice. And it’s going to give them an education in that topic
that they’ll keep,” McDonald added.
The scholarship recipients were honored at a ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the Muskingum County Courthouse.
