Local Member Speaks At Nelson T. Gant House
A local group is inviting the public to learn more about Zanesville history.
Gabriel Weatherspoon spoke at the Nelson T. Gant Education/Cultural Center Saturday morning to reminisce about Charles C. Coleman and the United Baptist Church’s C.C. Coleman Chorus.
"Mr. Coleman was a Sunday school teacher at Union Baptist, and during his tenure, he taught the boys at Sunday school 12 years and older," said Member of C.C. Coleman Chorus, Gabriel Weatherspoon.
The chorus was named in honor of the beloved teacher. Weatherspoon recalls how the church filled to capacity every Sunday when the group was performing.
"The Chorus swelled to approximately 35 and you know wherever the boys are, the girls are sure to pursue, and that’s what happened," he said.
The C.C. Coleman Chorus finally broke up in 1979 after the music director passed away. Weatherspoon is a retired Zanesville Fireman and an active member of the community.
