Local Phone Scam
A series of threats from a tele-marketer have one local woman ready to fight-back.
When Doris Brown received a phone call Monday night, a man claiming to be from a law-firm, told Doris her daughter-in-law was in serious trouble and needed money immediately. Having spent time with her daughter-in-law just last week, Brown said, she knew better.
"He was very threatening to me, about I needed to watch very careful what I said," said Brown. "When I told him I though this was a stupid and it was just a scam and I was hanging up, then he threatened me."
Brown filed a police report on this same man back in January. The man has continued to call her each day, insisting she send money. Muskingum County Sherif, Matt Lutz said, it’s difficult to track down tele-marketers like this because they are often from a different state or country.
"These people dont want you to know where they are at, and dont want you to know their true identity," said Lutz. "Because they are trying to fraud you, and they don’t want the police to come looking for them."
The Sheriff said, if a tele-marketer calls and threatens you, be sure to file a police report. If the identity of the tele-marketer can be tracked… They will be charged with Telephone Harassment, which he said, is a criminal charge.
