ZANESVILLE, OH – A local scout troop is making history by opening its doors to even more young people in the community.

Boy Scout Troop 128 has announced plans to convert into a co-ed scout troop, allowing both boys and girls ages 11 through 17 to participate together. The change comes as Scouting America expands the Family Troop option nationwide, following successful pilot programs across the country.

“Girls have been able to join the scouting program since 2019, but in separate troops. It was an all-girl troop or an all-boy troop, which can continue if that’s the option that troop wants. But now, you can combine them and have boys and girls together in one troop.” Troop 128 Committee Chair, Kevin Pinson said.

Leaders say the move will allow the troop to grow while giving young individuals the opportunity to experience outdoors and learn valuable life skills through scouting.

“Our troop is a very active outdoors organization. We do about 10 outings a year including summer camp. So, if they enjoy camping or if they’ve never done any camping before and they want to learn those skills, it’s a great opportunity.” Pinson said.

Troop 128 is chartered by Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zanesville and meets Monday evenings at 7 p.m. in the church basement.
