ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A local woman celebrated her 100 birthday today alongside friends and family.

Mary Gaffey exclaimed she was awakened from her nap to be taken to her birthday celebration, where she was greeted with cards and presents. Gaffey’s official 100 birthday was Thursday September 7, 2017.

“I couldn’t believe it when the day came,” said Gaffey. “I heard them talking about it, but when the day came it was just another day. It didn’t excite me.”

Gaffey experienced a lot in her life, from getting married, working as a nurses aid in Columbus during World War II, and even having to bury a child she helped raise. Through her experiences Gaffey learned one important lesson and was willing to share it with the younger generations.

“You have to learn to stand up for your rights and I do,” Gaffey said. “I never had any problems, I wouldn’t let anybody make problems with me.”

Gaffey exclaimed she had a happy life and is still making plans for her future. Happy belated Birthday Mary Gaffey.
