Lucille Bates age 99, of East Union, OH passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at her daughter’s home in Monroe, OH. She was born May 9, 1925 in Noble County, OH a daughter of the late Ralph and Margaret Poling Archer.

She was a member of the former East Union United Methodist Church, where she was very active for many years. She enjoyed quilting with friends in her free time. Many will remember Lucille as the owner and operator of the Bates Grocery Store in East Union, where she retired at the age of 89. She was known for making the best lunch meat and cheese sandwiches for miles around. Anyone that knew Lucille, loved her.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Lewis William Bates, whom she married January 9, 1946 and who passed away March 23, 1977; four brothers Carlos Archer, Junior Archer, John Archer, and Marvin Archer; four sisters Faye Crabtree, Leona Archer, Eileen Davis and Nancy Howell, and a beautiful granddaughter, Kelsi Cofer.

Those left to cherish her memory are her five daughters Sally (Timothy) King of Monroe, OH, Susie (Terry) Cofer, Becky Bates, Kristy (Rick) Hall, and Tammy Bates all of Middletown, OH; son William “Bill” (Cora) Bates of Sarahsville, OH; 14 grandchildren, Andrea (Scott) Seder, Angela (Danny) Gebhardt, Billy Fletcher, Carey (Ron) Blind, Robbie (Beth) McFarland, Kami Hall, JB (Carrie) Davis, Amy (Rob) Fields, Esti Ballard, Ali Gebhardt, Tisha Swart, Joshua (Andrea) Hall, Lindsay (Kevin) Duff and Scotty (Megan) Mcfeeter, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday, July 28, 2024 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724. A funeral service will conclude visitation Sunday, July 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel, with Scott Seder officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed in Lucille’s Honor to the East Union Cemetery Association, c/o Bill Bates, 21998 Woodsfield Road, Sarahsville, OH 43779.
