Main Street Temporarily Closed Due To Falling Bricks

A problem with a building in Downtown Zanesville forced the temporary closing of a sidewalk on Main Street Friday morning.

Some bricks fell from the right corner of the Olde Towne Antique Mall at 527 Main Street. The Zanesville Fire Department responded to the scene along with Code Enforcement Officer Tim Smith. Zanesville Public Safety Director Fred Buck says the building is structurally sound. Jeff Snyder, owner of the antique shop believes the falling bricks are a safety concern.

"I sure do. I don’t want anybody walking down the sidewalk and having a brick fall on them. But its the same way, the whole parking lot has had bricks falling on it for years and that hasn’t been addressed which it should be. Yeah that’s definitely a safety concern."

The loose bricks were the result of weathering after the building that used to be there was demolished to make room for parking spots. Part of the parking lot is taped off and will remain that way until other loose bricks can be secured. The city expects to have the issue resolved next week.
