MCCF’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Book Scholarship Applications Now Open

SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Muskingum County Community Foundation has opened up applications to its 28th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Book Scholarship scholarships.
The award recipients will receive two $250 scholarships, one for each semester of their freshman year, and the goal is to reduce the burden of paying for college by helping cover university’s secondary expenses.
“It is available to minority students in Muskingum County. They have to be part of the CP track at least or something above that in order to be eligible. They must have a 3.0 GPA and they must have at least an 18 on the ACT to be eligible,” Katie McCarty, Manger of Educational Services at the Muskingum Community Foundation stated.
Historically, the students the scholarship is intended to benefit are a part of families who have been disenfranchised for generations which has caused them to be less likely to attend higher education than their non-minority peers. This scholarship is aiming to cut away at one of the most expensive non-tuition costs of attending college.
“Typically, these students tend to not go to college or possibly go on for higher education, so this is trying to encourage them to do so. They have to be attending a two or four year institution in order to receive this scholarship and we’re just trying to encourage those students to go on so they can better their lives,” McCarty said.
McCarty said that if you meet the eligibility requirements for the scholarship and you apply, you will more than likely be awarded the book scholarship. To apply, you can head to the Muskingum County Community Foundation’s website and select their Scholarship Central tab.
