MCLS Invites the Community to Explore the Wild Side of Music

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Library System is getting ready to explore the wild side of music with an upcoming program.
Crash, Boom, Bang will take place on Wednesday, Nov.19th from 4 to 5PM at the South Branch Library.
Alex Simmons, an Assistant Youth Librarian, said this program will be similar to their 30 minute Music Makers program they host at all of their Branches, but this one will be a little different.
“We have a lot of music programming and I like to focus on STEAM programming.” Simmons said. “So I’m taking some STEAM aspects, the Science and Engineering specifically, of how sound and music work together and how sound creates music. How we can use everyday sounds that we hear to combine them into making music where you don’t expect to find it.”
Simmons said this program is open for toddlers and young kids but parents are also invited to come and join the fun.
She said they will use items like rhythm sticks, egg shakers, and pans to play the tune, “Ode to Joy.”
“We first talk about different aspects of sound and how sound works.” Simmons said. “Then we talk about the different aspects of what makes music and how sound makes music. We practice different musical things such as patterns, recreating patterns, pitches, how different things we may have, make a different pitch using different ways. Then rhythms, we talk a little bit about dynamics and they really enjoy when we talk about the dynamics and how we practice making softer sounds with our instrument versus louder sounds with the instrument.”
