MLK Book Scholarship Now Accepting Applications

College tuition costs are higher then they have every been. For High School Seniors, it’s time to start thinking of ways to help manage that high cost.

Applications are now being accepted from minority students for the 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Book scholarship. The scholarship will award multiple students with $500 to help with the cost of their college books.

Heather Sands from the Muskingum County Community Foundation told us about the scholarship program, "It started in 1997, so it’s been established for a long time. It’s in conjunction with the Prayer Breakfast held in January. The committee works very hard every year to put this together, and the community foundation helps establish the scholarship with the community supporters. There’s a lot of volunteers that go into making this scholarship happen, and we just help administer the funds for the scholarship committee."

The scholarship program is competitive, but there are ways to ensure that you stand out.

"Definitely share information on community service," said Sands. "So there’s a page on the form that has to be verified that they have committed to some type of volunteer or community service to their community. We want to make sure that they’re giving back, so on their application whether they’re in key club, or volunteering at Christ Table or giving back some how to the community to help volunteer."
