Monday is Lights For Life Day
The Mayor of Zanesville is proclaiming next Monday, November 16th, Lights For Life Day.
Mayor Howard Zwelling gave the proclamation to students and staff at Mid East Career and Technology Centers Friday morning. Lights For Life Day is a campaign by the Ohio Students Against Destructive Decisions also known as SADD.
"We wanted to prevent accidents and a lot of teens have been in accidents because of texting and doing other things other than concentrating on driving and we just want to lower the numbers of accidents," says Saylor Rock a health technology student.
Students at Mid East will sign the Lights For Life banner as a pledge that they will drive safely. This is the first year for Lights For Life day and to raise awareness the Mid East SADD chapter has passed out 1,400 window displays to students and faculty. Mayor Zwelling says Maple Avenue has the most the most traffic accidents out of any road in Ohio. So he is all for any campaign that will reduce accidents.
"We like any project that goes along with safety for our citizens and Mid East and SADD have come up with a good one right here and we ask the citizens of Zanesville to participate in that and drive with their head lights on on November 16th," says Mayor Howard Zwelling
Mid East will also hold a program in conjunction with their criminal justice students on drunk driving next week and after school Monday, the Ohio State Patrol and Muskingum County Sheriff will be in the parking lot encouraging students to drive safely.
Mid East says it is proud of the leadership its students have taken within the community.
