Muskingum County History Invites Community to Celebrate the Past

ZANESVILLE, OH – Muskingum County History is inviting the community to step back in time with two special events at Ohio University Zanesville, all part of the ongoing Muskingum 250 initiative.

The first event will be held on Wednesday, August 20th, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Herrold Hall. Guests can explore their family roots during a genealogy program. The presentation will be led by Brooke Anderson from the Muskingum County Genealogical Society. She’ll guide participants through how to discover if their ancestors were among the county’s earliest settlers and how to join the First Families of Muskingum County group.

“She’ll be talking about the first families of Muskingum County. She’s going to teach us how to learn if our ancestors were possibly a part of the first families that lived in Muskingum County. We know about the McIntire’s, and we know about Dr. Increase Matthews family, but we want to know about other families who settle here and stayed here as well.” Muskingum County History Executive Director, Larisa Harper said.

Then, on Friday, August 22nd, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., history will come to the big screen in Elson Hall. The special movie night will feature The First American, an engaging documentary exploring the extraordinary life and legacy of George Washington.

“The movie is called The First American, and it is about George Washington. It’s a documentary, so it’s more of a factual look back and insight to his life, legacy, and all that we gained from his leadership. It’s family friendly, it’s rated PG, but it is something that I think a lot of people will enjoy. We all know about George Washington, but maybe we’ll learn some things that we didn’t learn in history class before.” Harper said.

Both of these events are free and open to the public. You can visit the Muskingum County History website to find more details and other exciting upcoming events.
