Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Alert

ZANESVILLE, Ohio–The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about a phone scam.
The Sheriff’s Office said it has received reports that Muskingum County residents are being called by a scammer claiming to be one of their deputies.
Authorities said the scammer will contact you over the phone and notify you that you have missed a court date, wanting information from you, or violated the law in some manner, and there has been a warrant issued for your arrest. They then try to get you to make a payment for the bond that was issued in lieu of arrest.
Sheriff Lutz wants the public to know that his deputies, nor any law enforcement entity, will ever contact you in an attempt to collect money.
The best practice is to not answer calls from numbers you do not know and if ever in doubt, hang up and call your local law enforcement.
