Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office levy

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office has an issue on tomorrows ballot.

A bond issue on the ballot proposes a one mill levy for 30 years. Sheriff Matt Lutz said the levy will cost taxpayers around $35 a year on a $100,000 home value. He said the current county jail is too small and was built in 1974 and 1975.

“It’s lasted us over 40 years and it was only designed to hold about 50 inmates. So, we feel building a new building that’s designed, as a jail from the start with this kind of spacing, would definitely last us at least that. My thing is probably 50 years at least.”

Sheriff Lutz said if the levy passes the new jail will allow the county to stop spending large amounts of money to house prisoners in other county jails.

“If you build a facility like this instead of paying $100,000 out to other counties, taking that money out of our community,” said Sheriff Lutz. “We would be saving that money and then other counties…could also bring prisoners to us. Which in return would provide space for them, but would also create income for the commissioner’s account here in Muskingum County.”
