Muskingum River is freezing, what you need to know

ZANESVILLE, Ohio–The Muskingum River is starting to freeze, and with more winter weather coming to Ohio, some officials are worried.
There are a couple spots on the river where ice has formed, although it’s still freely flowing.
However, if enough ice forms it could cause a jam allowing water and ice to rise and flood the surrounding area.
Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency Director Jeff Jadwin said the department is keeping an eye on it.
“We will watch it real closely, drive the river at least once a day, if not twice, to make sure any of the ice is starting to jam,” Jadwin said. “It keeps us busy.”
With snowy conditions on the way, Jadwin said people shouldn’t worry about the river but rather what’s coming Friday night.
He suggests following the sheriff’s department guidelines and having a plan in mind for emergency situations, like power outages and getting stuck on the roads.
Jadwin said about one to two inches could fall, but he wants to remind people to stay safe.
“If they’ve gotta leave their homes, have a to-go bag, which we really preach that it includes medication, money, food, water, blankets, flashlights, batteries,” Jadwin said.
The to-go bag could be helpful if you get stuck on a snowy roadway. If that happens, make sure to call for help and remain in the vehicle.
