Muskingum University Health and Wellness Fair

Older Adults Health Fair Social

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Muskingum University plays a major role in the small community of New Concord and is always looking for unique ways to interact with the public.

Muskingum University Occupational Therapy Program Director Kim Lawler announced a health and wellness educational fair that allows students to interact with area senior citizens and provide basic tips that can improve their overall way of living.

“They’ll get tips on home safety,” Lawler said. “On how to do energy savings so that they can work smarter not harder, we all need that; to be able to look at the little small home modifications they might make. Look at fall prevention at home and in the community. Be able to look at ways they can drive and maintain their safety as they age and also just look at overall wellness; keeping their mental health and their ability to keep that positive mental attitude to enjoy life as well.”

Lawler noted that occupational therapy looks at an individual holistically, which includes all aspects that are associated with life. And staying healthy prevents the need of trying to regain health.

Not only will the health and wellness fair benefit the attendees but will afford the students with hands-on experience toward their future career.

“The students get to bring their learning to life in this event,” Lawler said. “This semester they’re focusing on how to provide occupational therapy services for older adults. And in this case, they get to deliver that in-person with the people that come visit us.”

The event is free and will take place from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 2, at the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex, next to the football field. A shuttle service will be provided for convenient parking and attendees are encouraged to arrive at 10:30 for registration.
