Muskingum Valley Park District Receives Grant for Walking Trail

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum Valley Park District has been awarded a $1 million grant through the Ohio Wonderful Waterfronts initiative.

The grant, part of a statewide effort involving 12 other counties, aims to enhance the scenic recreational appeal of Ohio’s waterways. The funds will be used to construct a new canal walking trail in the Canal Park by the iconic Y-Bridge, providing a perfect spot for strolling, jogging, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

“We received $1,178,000.00. The money will be used to develop a paved trail as well as overlooks. What’s important is educational kiosks so that we can highlight the history of Zanesville and really the river and the lock system,” Muskingum Valley Park District Executive Director Russell Edginton said.

This projects not only adds to the aesthetic and recreational value of the area, but it also strengthens community ties. The trail is expected to be completed by 2026.

“We did a statistically valid survey a couple years ago and the number one thing that people who responded to the survey asked for was paved recreational trails that connect communities. This really fits the bill,” Edginton said.

The Muskingum Valley Park District wants to remind the community about the National Public Gardens Day celebration at Mission Oaks on Saturday, May 11th, from 10 AM to 2 PM. This year’s event will feature a native plant sale, with vendors, music, lunch, and more. For more details, visit the Mission Oaks Garden website.
