ZANESVILLE, OH – In honor of February being National Children’s Dental Health Month, Muskingum Valley Health Center’s Dental Clinic is spreading smiles and offering valuable advice for parents to keep their little ones’ teeth sparkling.

MVHC highlighted that dental decay ranks as the top chronic childhood disease in the US, but it’s also the most preventable. They stress that prevention starts and home and emphasized the importance of helping children choose a tooth-friendly diet.

“In order to prevent it, it really starts at home with teaching parents proper home care and also helping the child choose a really great diet. Especially sugary drinks, we really try to get kids to stay away from sugary drinks as much as possible.” MVHC Registered Dental Hygienist, Erin Gamble said.

MVHC recommends bringing children to the dentist as soon as they get their first tooth. It’s also recommended to help children brush their teeth at home to help set them on the path to a lifetime of good oral health.

“Most children, especially the toddlers, are pretty independent and want to do it on their own. It’s really important that we go in after them or before them, just to help make sure that they haven’t missed anything. It’s important just to go in, check, and make sure that your child is doing a good job with their brushing.” Gamble said.
