Native American Pow Wow Shares History
This Labor Day marked a special event in Licking County for Native Americans in the region.
It was the 29th Annual Labor Day Weekend Powwow at Newark Earthworks…a celebration of Native Heritage. Co Chairman Mark Welsh said there is more than 365 Native American Cultures in the United States with songs and dance bringing generations together.
"That tells me we’re going to have a good future," said Welsh, "When the kids get the interest and stay with it then we’re able to continue these traditions generation after generation after generation , and I think that’s a beautiful concept, a concept everyone should have."
Liana Bringsthem and Taeya Welsh have been taking part in the Powwows their entire life saying it’s an opportunity to experience what their parents and grandparents experienced.
"We live in the native ways, how the native people would live," said Welsh.
Music, arts, crafts and games were available throughout the weekend. The goal of the Powwow is to remind residents of the rich heritage behind the Native American culture by bringing it back to the area.
