Four days after 47-year-old Robert "Chris" Caples was brutally murdered, his neighbors are still in shock.
"We just had no idea that something like this would ever happen over there."
But the worst did happen. Around 10:30 Friday night Cambridge Police found the body of the former Director of the Thompkins Center Juvenile Residential Facility at his home on Beatty Avenue. 21-year-old Perry Buco is facing murder charges, and he’s no stranger to the victim.
"It would’ve been his step-dad that got murdered. He adopted him from the Thompkins Center."
Buco was arrested Saturday at the Baker’s Motel in Norwich after a deputy spotted his vehicle in the parking lot. Neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, said the two men seemed to have a healthy "father and son" relationship.
"They went everywhere together. I would’ve never thought this."
"They were quiet people. We never heard any arguing or fighting over there."
But looking back, neighbors may have missed tiny clues, warning that something wasn’t right. The victim’s BMW, his prized possesion, was parked outside of the garage around the time of the murder.
"He never leaves that car out. I wondered why he left the car out, but I really wish then we had called or done something."
Neighbors are now seeking justice for the man they refered to as a "juvenile advocate".
"The saddest part of all is that Chris had spent his life helping and working with troubled kids."
Buco is being held on a $1 million bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
