New Addition to the Rhino Family

There’s an exciting and historic new addition grazing at the Wild’s and it came as a Halloween treat.

Anon a female African White Rhino was born at the Wild’s October 31st and becomes the first fourth generation rhino born at the facility. The Director of Animal Management says despite it being the first baby to the mother she’s taking care of her just as she’s supposed to.

"We actually just keep a close eye them. It’s amazing how quickly labor and birth is," said Director of Animal Management Dan Beetem. "They do fine on their own, knock on wood, have never had a problem."

Beetem says that rhino’s have a gestational period of 16 months and when Anon was born she weighed 80-100 pounds and gains more every day. This spring she’ll join the rest of the rhino herd in the open pastures.

"She should grow up right here in our her. It’ll be interesting to see if like her mom growing up here at the Wild’s in our wide open spaces what’s very like a natural herd, grow up and produce offspring of her own."

If you can’t wait till spring to see the new edition. The Wild’s is hosting winter tours by reservation only. Visit their website for more information.
