NEW CONCORD, Ohio – A brief one-mile walk around the campus of Muskingum University is all it takes to raise awareness for food insecurity and support local food banks. A local part of the national CROP Hunger Walk is set to take place this weekend.

Two churches and Muskingum University organize the New Concord CROP Hunger Walk to support their local food bank. The walk usually takes place on the Saturday of Muskingum University’s homecoming weekend but this year, it has a new twist starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday the 11th.

“…what’s exciting this year is by moving it to Sunday, we are joining with the College Drive Presbyterian Church and with New Concord United Methodist Church. And we will have a joint service. We traditionally have an alumni worship service that morning and the three, three of us bodies will come together, they will hold worship and then at 11 o’clock we’ll do the Crop Walk as a body, as to to whoever’s going to do the walk. So that’s very exciting,” said Muskingum University Chaplain Derek Wadlington.

25% of the funds raised stay in the local area and go towards the College Drive Presbyterian Church’s food bank and the college campus’ food pantry. According to Muskingum University Chaplain Derek Wadlington, this is a fantastic way to combat food insecurity in the area and that it’s an important part of caring for our neighbors.

“I love that it brings the community together to support the very real challenges of food security in our community,” Wadlington said. “And this year I’m particularly excited because it brings together not just folks on campus, not just a church but we are coming together as people of faith and worshiping together as one community and doing the walk. And so my goal, my hope, is that this takes this walk to a higher level than it’s been the last couple of years. It’s been successful, I want it to be even more successful.”
