New Dietary Guidelines Released

While many New Years Resolutions have fallen by the wayside, the State is keeping focused on trying to keep its residents healthy.

The Muskingum Valley Health Center has released new dietary guidelines by the Federal Government to help curb not only unwanted fat, but the constant issue of obesity in Ohio. Registered Dietician Claire Gately says these new guidelines focus on two different areas.

"For people to balance their calorie needs with their physical activity to attain and maintain a healthy weight. The second one is choosing more nutrient dense foods as well as drinks," says Gately.

She says combining healthy eating habits with moderate exercise helps adults not only lose weight but also decrease your chance of chronic disease.

"Use skim milk or fat free milk or 1 percent milk which is not 2 percent milk. You can eat much less fat, saturated fat, trans fat, and eat a lot more fruits and vegetables. Half your place should consists of fruits and vegetables," adds Gately.

Gately says new dietary guidelines for adults are done and released every five years.
