COLUMBUS, Ohio – Thursday the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors approved new pitch count regulations for high school baseball.

Last year the National Federation of State High School Associations ruled that all states must add a pitch count limit instead a regulation system based on innings. It was up to each state to determine its own regulation. Previously a pitcher in Ohio could pitch up to 10 innings in a three-day span.

The new regulations say a pitcher can pitch a maximum of 125 pitches in a single day. Any pitcher who throws between 31-50 pitches in a single day must be given off one day. Between 51-75 pitches thrown and a pitcher must be given off two days. And any pitcher who throws more than 76 pitches in a day must have three days off.

All teams are required to keep track of each pitcher’s pitch count and make it available to the OHSAA upon request. Pitches thrown during a game that is suspended or interrupted still count towards the regulations, as do pitches thrown in scrimmages.
