ODOT Holds Public Meeting in Morgan County

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Transportation District 10 held a public meeting this afternoon at the Riecker Building in McConnelsville.

The purpose was to discuss a proposed intersection improvement project for Morgan County. As part of the project, new roundabouts would be constructed at both ends of the “new bridge” that connects Malta and McConnelsville. Additionally, repairs would be made to the “new bridge” including the widening of the sidewalk, and construction of a barrier between the sidewalk and traffic.

The reason for the proposal is because of safety concerns with the “old bridge” and repair costs exceeding $5 million. However, some locals have safety concerns in regards to the project.

“I’ve got kids, and we are an active family, we’re an active town; so bicycling, walking, sports. I really just think they should put double lanes in, widen turn lanes off and onto the bridge,” said Lacy Morrow, one local resident.

Despite some safety concerns from residents, statistics show roundabouts are actually safer for both drivers and pedestrians. Roundabouts reduce fatal crashes by 90%, reduce injuries by 76%, and reduce all crashes by 35%. ODOT also explains that they reduce traffic congestion, pollution and fuel use, as well as provide monetary savings with no signal equipment to install and maintain.

While there were plenty of community members objecting the project, there were also local residents in attendance to show their support.

“I’ve never had any issues with them. Like I said before, I’ve been on vacation, and in Columbus, and places like that where they’re very prominent and they’re very, I think, easy to maneuver. And they’re very safe compared to intersections now,” added Owen Morrow, another local resident.

The total estimated cost of the project is $3.2 million, while funding is still being worked on with local partners. Construction would begin as early as Spring of 2018.

ODOT will accept public comments through May 4. All comments should be submitted to:

ODOT District 10, Attn: Ashley Rittenhouse, PIO, 338 Muskingum Dr. Marietta, OH 45750 or to Ashley.Rittenhouse@dot.ohio.gov.

Rittenhouse stressed that they encourage residents to send in their thoughts and comments. Once the 30-day period ends, ODOT will review all comments and concerns, after which they will meet with the Morgan County Commissioners, county Engineer, and county Improvement Corporation to make a final decision on the project.
