Cincinnati introduces Luke Fickell as head coach

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Ohio State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell is leaving the Buckeyes after 15 consecutive seasons on the coaching staff to take over as head coach of the University of Cincinnati, the school announced today.
The Columbus native and 1992 DeSales High School graduate was introduced in an official press conference in Cincinnati this afternoon.
“IÂ promise you you’ll see a fast and physical team that plays with incredible intensity, relentless effort and incredible care for one another,” Fickell said.
Though Fickell has officially accepted the head coaching position at UC, he will continue to coach the Buckeyes through their playoff run.
“I’ll never start something that I couldn’t finish,” Fickell explained.
He replaces former Bearcat coach Tommy Tuberville, who resigned from his post following a 4-8 season. Tuberville posted a 29-22 record in four seasons at the helm.
Fickell, who played for Ohio State from 1993-1996, served in a variety of roles on the Buckeyes’ staff. He was interim head coach for the Scarlet and Gray in 2011, guiding the Bucks to a 6-7 record.
Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer took to social media to express appreciation for his longtime assistant.
“Opportunities arise because of great dedication, great effort & great players! Congratulations to Luke Fickell, one of the best in the game!” Meyer tweeted.
Fickell and the #3 Buckeyes are set to play #2 Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal Dec. 31 in Glendale, Arizona.
