ATHENS, OH – Just over two weeks after placing its football head coach on leave, Ohio University makes the official announcement of relieving Brian Smith of his duties.

While no details were initially provided when the 45-year old was escorted off campus, recent details say that Smith reportedly stored and consumed alcohol in his office, even inviting assistant coaches to partake after games.

Through his attorney, the now former head man for the Bobcats denies any cause for termination, and is expected to contest the decision.

“The termination follows an administrative review of allegations that Smith violated the terms of his employment agreement by engaging in serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the University” says the school in a press release.

After being named the interim coach ahead of the 2024 Cure Bowl, a victory in last year’s game helped Smith receive the full-time position. The Bobcats finished 8-4 in the 2025 season, finishing third in a talented Mid-American Conference.

Defensive coordinator and interim head coach John Hauser will continue to lead the Bobcats into the ‘Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl’ on Tuesday, December 23rd against the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV).

The Bobcats will now begin a search for a third permanent coach in as many seasons.
