NEW CONCORD, OH – Muskingum University is getting ready to open an Art Exhibit that celebrates the women who helped shape the artistic landscape in Ohio.

The exhibition “Ohio Women Artists: Collection of Drs. Robert Burns and Eugene Folden” will open on Wednesday, March 25th at 3PM in the Louis O. Palmer Art Gallery.

Dr. Yan Sun, an Emeritus Professor of Art at Muskingum University, says there will be 46 pieces on display from artists like Edris Eckhardt, Elizabeth Nourse, and Alice Schille.

“They represent the American Women artists, all of the artwork is from the early 20th century, yea the years from 1900 to the 1950’s.” Sun said. “I want to represent, in art history, and most of the art movement, art historians talk about the Western Art in Europe and because from the 19th century, late 19th century, we know that some art movement in Paris, Paris was art central. But not many people talk about American artists.”

There will be paintings, prints, and mixed media works created by women who forged influential careers during times when female artists faced limited institutional support.

Dr. Tom German, the Chair of the Art & Design Department, says he’s honored to be able to host this exhibit for the students on campus as well as the community.

“To have something of this high caliber, here on campus, but we have plenty of things that are this quality but this one is especially nice.” German said. “Because it’s such a wide variety of works and it all came to us from a single, very convenient source, we didn’t have to go scouring all sorts of collections to find this.”

The exhibit will be open from March 25th until April 23rd.

There will also be a Lecture from the collectors, Drs. Robert Burns and Eugene Folden, on Monday, March 30th, at 2PM in the Gallery.
