Online Safety Discussion For Zanesville High School Students

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Zanesville High School students are invited to participate in an event featuring an informative discussion on safe internet practices.
Muskingum County Library System is working on a project to provide “hot spots” for the students. “Hot spots” are devices that allow them to access the internet at home. The Library wants to consider the safety of the students receiving the hot spots and created an event with a panel discussing social media and the legal and academic consequences of sexting and bullying online.
“We’ve created a panel of local experts, so from the Muskingum County Prosecuter’s Office, I’ll be on the panel, and also Zanesville City educators so that we can discuss some of those potential hazards and consequences of not acting responsibly on the internet,” said Youth Services Manager, Caitlyn Melick.
This event originated through a grant the Muskingum County Library System received from the Dollar General Literacy Fund in 2015. The Muskingum County Library System partnered with Zanesville City Schools to improve student access to educational materials.
“We don’t know if the students are going home and they don’t have the ability to get to those educational resources like the data bases that we provide through the library, or even assignments that are submitted digitally. So we want to make sure that we give them that opportunity to take home a device that will let them access that material,” said Melick.
The event will take place tomorrow night at Zanesville High School from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Zanesville High School students who participate in the program and attend the session will get the chance to check out the hot spots first. Hot spots are able to be checked out for two weeks at a time.
