Palmer decommits from Louisville

Joey Palmer

Former Sheridan football standout Joey Palmer announced his decommitment from the University of Louisville on Twitter Thursday morning.

“(The commitment) just didn’t feel right anymore,” Palmer told WHIZ in a phone interview. “I just got the feeling where, if I go there, I’m just a roster guy, I’m just a depth guy.”

Palmer had been committed to the Cardinals since early June. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound tackle owns offers from more than a handful of Division I schools, including Memphis, East Carolina, Toledo and Colorado State. Palmer said additional colleges expressed interest in him on social media following the decommitment.

Louisville planned on moving Palmer from tackle to guard, but the former General prefers staying put on the outside of the offensive line.

“Honestly, I wasn’t real hyped about playing guard anyway because I don’t want to have to learn another position,” Palmer said. “I’d much rather go somewhere where I feel like I’m needed.”

Palmer was needed in a big way for the Butler Community College Grizzlies this past season. He helped the JUCO powerhouse average 32.7 points per game in its seven victories.

Palmer plans to finish out the school year at Butler before heading to a new program in time for the 2017 season. Despite starting the recruiting process all over again, the lineman is excited to find the right fit.

“It would be great, of course, to play for Louisville and coach (Bobby) Petrino and everything, but I just want to go somewhere where I can (start),” Palmer said.
